Sublimation vs vinyl and screen print — what actually lasts

This is the single decision that determines whether a kit still looks sharp at the end of a season. Vinyl and heat-transfer numbers sit on the surface of the fabric: they feel slightly raised, they trap heat, and after thirty or forty washes the edges start lifting and cracking. Screen printing lasts longer but charges per colour, which pushes clubs toward simplified designs. Full-dye sublimation turns the ink into a gas that bonds with the polyester fibres — the print becomes part of the fabric. It cannot crack, peel or fade, it adds no weight or stiffness, and a six-colour gradient costs exactly the same as a plain block. The one limitation is that it only works properly on light polyester, which is why sublimated kit is always poly rather than cotton.

Choosing the right fabric for the sport

Dri-fit poly interlock is the standard jersey fabric — it wicks moisture, dries fast and holds print detail cleanly, which makes it right for football, cricket and athletics. Performance mesh has a more open knit for maximum airflow, and belongs on basketball and high-sweat indoor training. Four-way stretch with recovery is what makes gym leggings and fitted shorts squat-proof rather than sheer. Compression base fabric supports without restricting for under-kit layers. Tricot and brushed fleece handle tracksuits, warm-ups and travel kit. Chlorine-resistant poly is non-negotiable for team swimwear — ordinary polyester loses its colour in a pool within weeks.

Numbers, names and sponsor layout

Because the design is sublimated, numbers and names are printed into the same pass as the rest of the kit rather than applied afterwards. Send the team sheet and each shirt is laid out individually — chest or back number in your squad font, name arc above it, captain armbands where needed. Sponsor logos work the same way: front, back and sleeve placements sized and balanced so nothing fights the crest, and adding a fourth sponsor mid-season costs nothing extra beyond the reprint. The artwork stays on file, so a new signing in March gets a shirt identical to the ones printed in September.

Sizing a squad without a fitting day

Most clubs cannot get thirty players in one room for measurements, so we work from a size set instead — a sample in each size that goes round the squad for a week while everyone notes what fits. It is slower on the calendar but far more accurate than guessing from height and weight, and it removes the most common reason a kit order goes wrong. Youth academies get a size-graded run rather than adult sizing scaled down, since junior proportions are genuinely different.

Planning around a season or a tournament

Standard sublimated kits ship in 7–12 working days from design approval, and rush tournament orders can be compressed to 4–6 days. The part clubs underestimate is the approval stage — mockups come back within 24–48 hours, but committee decisions on colours and sponsor placement often take longer than the production itself. If a season starts in September, briefing us in July with a firm sponsor list is the difference between a relaxed timeline and a rush charge.
