What Is the Average Cost of a School Uniform in the UAE?

Plan on AED 600 to AED 2,000 per child per year. That covers a basic kit at the low end, and blazers, PE kits and shoes at the high end. Two full uniform sets come to roughly AED 600, and some families at certain schools told Khaleej Times their yearly uniform spend was close to AED 5,000.
So where does your child’s school fall in that range? It mostly depends on two things: the curriculum, and how many items carry the school logo.
School Uniform Cost by Curriculum
Curriculum tells you more about the uniform bill than anything else. A British school usually adds blazers, ties and house colours. A CBSE school usually keeps the list short. Estimated full-set costs per child are AED 1,500 to 2,500 at premium British schools, AED 800 to 1,500 at mid-tier British schools, AED 600 to 1,200 at American schools, and AED 300 to 700 at CBSE schools.
| Curriculum | Full uniform, per child |
|---|---|
| Premium British | AED 1,500 – 2,500 |
| Mid-tier British | AED 800 – 1,500 |
| American | AED 600 – 1,200 |
| CBSE | AED 300 – 700 |
Price Per Item: School Shop vs Factory
What parents see at the counter is a list of separate items, and the logo makes each one expensive. Back in August, a Dubai mother described paying AED 180 for two formal shirts, AED 110 for plain black PE trousers, and AED 110 for a logo sweater. When Lovin Dubai polled its readers, 95% of the 665 who voted said uniforms had become too expensive.
Is your school uniform costing parents more than it should?
Send us your item list, pupil numbers and school crest. You get fabric swatches, an embroidered sample and a line-by-line quote within one working day, with crest digitising and name tapes included on bulk orders.
Here’s what those same garments cost at factory level when a school orders in bulk:
| Item | Paid by parents at school shops | Factory price on a bulk school order |
|---|---|---|
| Shirt or blouse | Around AED 90 | AED 35 – 75 |
| Trousers, skirt or pinafore | Around AED 105 | AED 55 – 110 |
| PE kit | AED 110 for trousers alone | AED 60 – 120 for tee and shorts |
| Logo sweater | Around AED 110 | Depends on knit and weight |
| Crested blazer | Varies by school | AED 180 – 360 |
To be fair, these numbers aren’t directly comparable. A parent buys one piece, and a school orders hundreds. Still, the gap makes one thing clear: most of what parents pay goes to the supply chain, not the fabric.
Four Reasons UAE School Uniforms Cost So Much
1. Parents have only one place to buy
Many private schools tell parents to buy from one approved vendor, either on campus or nearby, and usually explain it as keeping the colour, fabric and logo consistent. When the seller has no competition, the price has no ceiling.
2. Kids grow every year
The first year’s bill is the big one, but it isn’t the last. A sensible estimate is to set aside half to 60 percent of the original cost each year for replacements as children grow.
3. Heat wears out cheap fabric fast
In UAE weather, a school shirt goes in the wash after almost every wear. Low-grade fabric fades, pills and loses its shape within a term. The cuffs, knees and pocket corners usually go first.
4. More than one child
Every extra child multiplies the bill. Parents with two or more children can find the back-to-school uniform spend alone going past AED 5,000.
A Realistic Yearly Budget for One Child
For a mid-range private school, a practical plan looks like this:
- First year: AED 800 to 1,500 for the full kit, including PE and knitwear.
- Every year after: about half of that for replacements.
- January top-up: an extra shirt and pair of trousers, because the first set rarely lasts the whole year.
With a five-day week and daily washing, three shirts, two bottoms and two PE sets is the practical minimum. Anything less means doing laundry every night.
Do You Have to Buy From the School Shop?
Not always. The rules depend on the emirate. In Dubai, KHDA’s School Fees Framework applies not only to tuition but also to services the school provides, including uniforms. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK makes schools list uniforms as a separate part of their fees, and parents can skip that charge if they buy second-hand items that meet the school’s actual requirements.
The simplest step is to email the school and ask which items must have the crest and which can be plain. The answer can save you a few hundred dirhams per child.
How Parents Cut the Cost
- Buy plain basics elsewhere. Items without a logo, such as plain shirts and socks, can often be bought from hypermarkets if they match the school’s colours and style.
- Ask a local tailor. One Dubai parent found trousers and shirts at a tailoring shop for about half of what the official store charged.
- Check the PTA’s used-uniform sale. Second-hand sales run by school PTAs can save families 40 to 60 percent.
- Don’t buy two sizes up. An oversized blazer looks untidy for a year and only fits for a term. Adjustable waists and hems are a better fix.
What Schools Can Do to Lower the Bill for Parents
Most of a family’s uniform cost is decided long before the shop opens, when the school writes the specification. As a school uniform manufacturer in Ajman, we’ve seen these four decisions make the biggest difference.
Plan for growth at the pattern stage
Adjustable waistbands, extra hem and sleeve allowance, and reinforced knees on primary trousers let one garment last through a growth spurt. Through our uniform stitching services, these details are built in from the start, so they don’t add cost later.
Put the crest only where it’s needed
A logo can double the price of a plain polo. Keep crest embroidery for blazers, sweaters and the main shirt, and let parents buy plain trousers, socks and belts from anywhere.
Spec PE kit for the climate
PE kit is replaced more often than any other item, because it gets sweat, sun and washing every day. Moisture-wicking fabric with a tested UPF rating lasts longer and protects children during outdoor PE. Our sports uniform manufacturing unit makes PE sets and house-colour kit to that standard.
Buy direct and keep reorders small
Every middleman adds a margin. Buying from the factory removes it. And when the supplier keeps your crest file and colour codes on record, a new student joining in February can be outfitted from a 10-piece order instead of a costly one-off batch.
So, How Much Should a School Uniform Cost?
Most UAE families spend around AED 1,000 per child a year on school uniforms, within a range of AED 600 to 2,000. The fabric is rarely what makes it expensive. The real cost comes from single-vendor rules, yearly replacements and middlemen. Parents can save by buying plain items elsewhere, and schools can save even more by specifying for growth and buying direct from a manufacturer.
