Bleach and Fabric Softener Destroy an FR Coverall
This happens after the purchase order closes, and the garments still look fine while it is happening. Any industrial coverall supplier that hands over FR without a care briefing has sold you a garment that will quietly stop protecting.
Softener and starch coat the fibre. That masks the FR performance, and the residue itself acts as fuel if the garment ignites. A softened FR coverall can burn better than an untreated one.
A coverall soaked in oil, grease, solvent or fuel is carrying an accelerant. The FR fabric may not ignite, but the contaminant will. NFPA 2113 is explicit that contaminated garments come out of service.
A crew taking coveralls home to wash with the family laundry, ordinary detergent, softener and a hot cycle will have unprotected garments inside a year. ASTM F2757 prohibits all of it.
Inherent or Treated FR Coverall? Ask Who Launders Them
Two completely different products are sold under the same three letters, and the price gap is wide enough that buyers assume the cheaper one is the same thing. It is not, and the deciding question is not the hazard. It is the laundry.

What Goes Under the FR Coverall Matters as Much as the Coverall
This is the one that causes injuries. An FR coverall worn over a non-FR polyester t-shirt is a hazard, not a protection.
Polyester melts to skin
In a flash fire the outer layer resists ignition and self-extinguishes as designed. The polyester underneath melts, against skin, under a garment holding the heat in. The burn is frequently worse than it would have been with no base layer at all.
Cotton or FR only
Next to skin, cotton or an FR base layer. Nothing synthetic. This is the cheapest safety improvement available on any site and it costs the price of a t-shirt.
Worn closed, sleeves down
NFPA 2113 covers the wearing rules that get ignored: collar closed, sleeves down and secured, and shirt tucked in where a two-piece is worn instead of a coverall.
Lightest compliant fabric
A coverall unzipped to the waist in July protects nothing. That is an argument for specifying the lightest fabric that still meets the standard, not the heaviest available.

Most coverall ranges are one block scaled up and down and labelled unisex. On a mixed crew that is a fit problem before it is anything else, and on site a fit problem becomes a safety problem: a coverall that bunches at the waist snags on plant and scaffold, and excess fabric at the cuff catches in rotating equipment.

The Six Points Where a Coverall Fails First
Two coveralls in the same fabric can have very different service lives. What separates them is where the reinforcement went, and reinforcing these six points is cheaper than replacing the garment.

What Each Coverall Standard Actually Covers
Each of these is a documented test result, not a description. If a supplier lists a standard without being able to produce the test report behind it, the standard is decoration.
Protection against flame, contact heat, convective heat, radiant heat and molten metal splash. The general FR standard for industrial garments.
Specific to welding processes. Protection against small splashes of molten metal and brief flame contact. Class 1 and Class 2 by process severity.
Class 3 is the highest, required by most road and rail work. Defined by minimum surface area of background and retroreflective material, which is why size affects class.
For environments where static discharge could cause ignition: fuel handling, electronics, refinery zones. Performance depends on the garment being worn closed and earthed through footwear.
Limited protection against liquid chemical splash. Type 6 is the lightest chemical category and is not a substitute for a Type 3 or 4 suit.

Coverall Manufacturer Guide to Fabric Weight and Heat Stress
Heavier is not automatically safer. Heat stress is a genuine hazard here, and an over-specified garment gets unzipped and worn open, which defeats the protection completely. The safest coverall is the lightest one that still meets the standard.
Branding That Survives the Same Laundry the Fabric Does
Any coverall manufacturer applying branding to an FR garment has to keep it compatible with the FR specification. A standard heat transfer on FR fabric can compromise the garment, which is why the application method changes by tier rather than by preference.

The honest way to choose: if the garment will go into a controlled industrial laundry with a documented FR wash formula, treated FR is excellent value and we specify it often. If the garment will be laundered by the worker at home, in a camp, or by an unknown third party, the risk sits with treated FR and inherent is worth the money.
